Winter is fast approaching, and we’re at that time of year once again when we have to contend with blustery winds, freezing rain, and gloomy skies. But despite the weather, we have to keep a positive attitude – after all, we experience it every year! One aspect that’s funny about winter is the fact that we always react as if it’s never happened before. “It’s November already!” “There’s so much snow!” “I can’t believe it’s so cold outside!” These, and other reactions, are quite common, and I’ve been guilty of them myself.
But then again, winter has its own special charm. Eggnog, mistletoe, and presents come to mind. And if you have to go outside (like most of us do who are living in the 21st Century), then you need to outfit yourself appropriately.
And when it comes to winter outfits, there’s nothing that’s quite as important as a jacket. I, for one, am very particular about the jackets I choose. And if you are like me and want to make a worthy buy, then below are some handy tips on picking a winter coat.
Choosing the fabric
In choosing a winter jacket, the fabric takes centre stage. Why? Because you don’t want a fabric that can’t keep out the cold. Certain fabrics are especially built for this, such as cashmere and wool. There are also other fabrics that are great at keeping you warm, such as goose down which is usually sewn into the jacket’s lining. Look for a jacket which has an acetate lining of wool, cashmere, goose down, or a synthetic fabric to keep you cozy even on the windiest and wettest of days.
Choosing the fit
The next step is fitting the jacket on. Needless to say, you’d want a jacket that fits you right and doesn’t make you look like the Marshmallow Puff Man. To determine the fit that’s right for you, here’s one tip: go one size higher than your usual fit for a suit jacket. Check that the seams at the shoulder fall a little bit off the edge of your own shoulder, so you can move about without feeling too constricted. Remember, you’re set to wear this jacket for a couple of months at least, and you’d want to be comfortable and be able to move around freely without worrying about nips and tears on your armpits or sides.
Choosing the style
Nowadays, there’s more emphasis on style when it comes to jackets. You don’t just want to go for a jacket which is practical but sloppy-looking. You want to be able to use this jacket in a variety of settings, whether you’re out for a brisk walk to the corner shop or a fun dinner with friends. Stylish jackets, such as pea coats, are all the rage nowadays.
